A blacklisted device, what does it mean?
A blacklisted device has been prohibited from accessing a network or service. This can occur for various reasons, including reports of the device being stolen or lost, involvement in fraudulent activities, or being blocked by a network operator due to contract violations, such as failing to pay the contract bill. Blacklisting serves as a safeguard against the misuse of lost or stolen devices. However, it’s important to note that legitimate customers can also be impacted. For instance, if a device is blacklisted due to an unpaid bill, the customer may be unable to use the device until proof of payment is provided.
How can you check if your device has been blacklisted?
There are a few methods to determine if your device has been blacklisted:
1. Check with your mobile operator: Get in touch with your mobile operator to inquire about your device’s status. They can inform you if your device has been blacklisted and provide the reasons behind it.
2. Use a phone blacklist checker service: Numerous online services can check the blacklisted status of your phone. You can find your device’s IMEI number by dialing *#06# on your phone.
How to avoid purchasing a blacklisted device:
If you plan to buy a second-hand phone, it’s crucial to verify its blacklisted status before making the purchase. Exercise caution if the price seems unusually low, as blacklisted devices are often sold at a discount due to their limited usability on major carrier networks. When in doubt about a device’s blacklist status, it’s best to avoid the purchase.
Why network operators disrupt services to blacklisted devices:
The decision by Mobile Network Operators (MNO) to deactivate/suspend the services of devices (blacklist) was made in conjunction with Business Against Crime (BAC) to protect their customers as well as to address crime in the trade of stolen devices. These devices are often lost or stolen, with a high risk of being used for fraudulent activities, such as making unauthorized calls or accessing personal data. It is a requirement under RICA that any, lost, stolen, damaged and/or destroyed device needs to be reported to the South African Police Services (SAPS)
The impact of having a blacklisted device:
Being blacklisted can have various effects on your network experience. Typically, blacklisted devices are unable to access the network for calls, text messages, or internet usage.

Understanding device blacklisting is essential for protecting your device and network from potential risks. By adhering to legitimate practices and being cautious when purchasing second-hand devices, you can avoid the inconveniences associated with blacklisted devices and ensure a more secure and reliable mobile experience.
