Throughout 2017 employees in Cell C’s Commercial Fibre Division volunteered their time once a month at the Ikhaya da Luz children’s safe haven and foster home in Benoni which provides a safe haven for abandoned and orphaned children.
This festive season these employee volunteers decided to also donate basic items to the home’s young inhabitants. As an added act of kindness, Cell C’s CSI Department matched their efforts to enable them to buy more toiletries and foodstuffs.
On December 9, Cell C employees visited Ikhaya da Luz to hand over the items they had collected.
Says the home’s director Ana Pinto Le Roux: “We are grateful to Cell C for the much needed contribution, especially at this time of year when our Home fills to capacity with children who are removed from danger. It will put a smile on our children’s faces.”
Suzette Nel, Operations Specialist for Broadband in Cell C commented: “During the course of the year we have got to know the children at Ikhaya and they have captured our hearts. We just wanted to do something more this festive season to make their lives easier and to show them that there are people who care.”
Suzette van der Merwe; Managing Executive of Cell C’s Corporate Social Investment says: “Employee volunteering is a logical extension of our company values as well as our aspiration to be highly involved in the communities where we operate. Cell C recognises that each employee has the right to volunteer and is cognisant that volunteering is always a matter of choice and as such will not be enforced. Through our Employee Volunteering programme, we offer matched funding to support our employee initiatives at a registered charity/NPO, and to recognise the contribution that they make.”
