Cell C has come to the aid of the nearly 160 Alexandra residents who have been left homeless after more than 60 shacks were destroyed in a devastating fire earlier this month.

As part of its ongoing Random Acts of Kindness campaign, the company will be donating R20 000 to a fund started to help those affected by this tragedy.

The community of Alexandra, department officials and disaster management teams were on the scene to help when the fire broke out on April 4 this year.

The local disaster management committee of the City Council – which includes the Departments of Housing and Safety and Social development, as well as, NGOs and churches – has appealed for help for those who have lost all their possessions. They have already provided limited assistance and have asked for support while the victims stay in churches, childcare centres and with Good Samaritans.

Cell C will assist those affected through the local disaster management committee of the City Council by providing funds for blankets, food, clothing and other basic necessities. Cell C was alerted to the residents’ plight by Eyewitness News.
