Cell C’s Working From Home Tips

As the nationwide lockdown enters its latest week, many South Africans are starting to accept that, for the foreseeable future, working from home has become ‘the new normal’.  While many might think that working from home is a dream come true – you may not miss sitting in gridlock on the way to work, for example – the fact is that working from home requires a whole new set of disciplines and practices that need to be adhered to, in order to maximise one’s time and maintain focus.

On top of which, working at home during lockdown can take its toll on many of us who are used to the social aspect of work, so maintaining communication become a vital part of the process.

Here are Cell C’s tips on working from home:

Get dressed

It’s vital to make sure that your work and home life don’t overlap one another entirely. As silly as it sounds, getting dressed is one of the most important habits to get into when working from home. The temptation to work in a dressing gown or pyjamas may be overwhelming to begin with, but doing so can blur the lines between your work and home life mind-set. Follow the routine you’d normally have if you were heading into the office and you will be unconsciously setting up boundaries between the time you spend working and the time you need to have for yourself.  

Designate regular working hours

Have a work schedule and stick to it. Start the day by making a list of        tasks, but adhere to your regular hours. Once the time comes where you’d normally be leaving work, close your laptop lid and take time for yourself. It’s also a good idea to schedule screen breaks throughout the working day. 

This isn’t always possible for some employees; on an average day work schedules can be interrupted by important assignments that an employer will task you with or even an emergency situation that arises outside of normal working hours.  But employees and employers alike should remember that as a general rule separating the working day from personal time is crucial to the wellbeing of all concerned.  When working from home, a work/life balance is vital. 

Have a work space

Another crucial aspect that helps partitioning work and home life is to make sure you have a specific area in your home that is a dedicated work station. Ideally this would be a desk situated in a room that is separate from areas you would choose to relax in – such as your bedroom or living room. Dedicate a space and equipment you use exclusively for work. 

Communication is Key

Working remotely removes the access one normally has to colleagues in the office – as well as day-to-day social interaction we all take for granted. To that end, it’s important to stay in close communication with your colleagues and employers through various platforms provided.

Before working remotely it’s important to have a plan that lays out tasks and deliverables from your department’s line-manager. This can govern how often you check in with management as well as providing a schedule for work flow. The plan may be subject to change and you may encounter problems, but in this instance it’s vital you communicate with colleagues, employers and even mentors from the work place.

Communication shouldn’t rely solely on email and shared documentation. Don’t avoid calling a colleague or line manager should problems arise; the rule of thumb here is if you feel better clarification would result from a face to face meeting, request one. This will limit the chance of miscommunication. 

It’s also important to keep in close contact with friends and loved ones. Working remotely can take its toll on people unused to it due to the lack of social interaction they normally enjoy; remember that a friendly voice is only a phone call away.

See the sun once in a while

When working from home under normal circumstances, many can fall into the habit of limiting their movement outside of work hours. Under lockdown, movement is severely limited, which only exacerbates this state of affairs. 

While some are lucky enough to have gardens, others currently find their movements restricted, but it’s still possible to make trips to the supermarket, chemist or other outlets for vital supplies. While this may seem just a function of daily life at the moment, it does provide the opportunity to get out of the house – just remember your COVID-19 face mask when you do and remember to wash your hands regularly and sanitise once you’re back home.
