Talita Cumi Water 4 CPT has delivered 50 tons of water to Cape Town

Eastern Cape, 7 February: Talita van der Heever, a well-known wedding photographer from East London, was determined to do something for the ongoing Cape Town water crisis and so began a campaign which, to date, has seen 50 tons of water delivered to drought-ravaged Cape Town.

Van der Heever's formation of Water 4 CPT, part of the non-profit organisation Talita Cumi, started off on social media.

"I was preparing my 18-month-old daughter's formula and the kettle was boiling. I saw news on my cellphone about Cape Town's Day Zero. It was the first I had heard of it. I thought of all those other mothers who would not have the water to prepare their children's food. I asked my 300 WhatsApp contacts to donate water and it all started from there," says Van der Heever.

"I was soon receiving calls from people I didn't know asking where they could deliver water to. Farmers, companies and private individuals all wanted to play their part and Water 4 CPT was born. To date 50 tons of water have been delivered to the drought-stricken city and given to old-age homes, children's homes and animal shelters."

The Talita Cumi Outreach also provides current news and updates on the water crisis as well as water saving tips.

As part of their on-going Acts of Kindness Campaign, Cell C has provided the NPO with smartphones, airtime, a laptop and data which will help in the administration of receiving of donations and the distribution of the water in Cape Town.

Says Suzette van der Merwe, Managing Executive Corporate Social Investment at Cell C: "The water crisis in Cape Town affects all South Africans and we all have a part to play when it comes to this precious resource. We are delighted to be able to help in a small way with Talita Cumi Water 4 CPT."
